2016 Virginia Ag Expo Celebrates Southside Virginia's

Agricultural Diversity

Double "B" Farms Hosts Largest Agricultural Field Day in the Commonwealth

Dinwiddie, VA - On a pleasant August day in Dinwiddie, more than 1,800 farmers, agriculture industry professionals, and interested parties from across the mid-Atlantic gathered at the 2016 Virginia Ag Expo on August 4th at Double "B" Farms, run by Billy Bain.

This year's theme, "Celebrating Southside Virginia's Agricultural Diversity" reminds us of the important role a diverse agricultural economy plays in Virginia's rural economy, and highlights the hard working farmers that continue to meet the changing demands of a growing population.

The event included more than 150 exhibitors on the farm displaying everything from GPS guided combines, to soil health products, the newest seed varieties, and agricultural finance services. The event provides an opportunity for farmers to learn more about the up-to-date farm equipment and technology for today's precision agriculture operations. Attendees enjoyed a full day of networking and time with exhibitors under the big tent representing nearly every facet of the agriculture industry.

Governor Terry McAuliffe was the guest of honor at this year's Ag Expo --- marking the first time a sitting Governor has attended the Expo in many years. Governor McAuliffe discussed Virginia's dedicated investment in agricultural best management practices. The most recent state budget includes $61 million for agricultural best management practices, the largest single investment since the Water Quality Improvement Fund's creation in 1998. Funding will support technical assistance from Virginia's Soil and Water Conservation Districts as well as a cost-share program administered by the Department of Conservation and Recreation with the Districts.

We thank Billy Bain and all of his family members and workers that made such great hosts of this year's Ag Expo. Their diversified farm operation is a wonderful representation of Southside Virginia agriculture with over 3,500 acres of crops consisting of corn, soybeans, wheat, peanuts, cotton, forage, as well as a beef cattle herd. Double "B" Farms is representative of an ideal operation that focuses on innovation and diversification as it continues to grow into the future.
